SÉRIE PUBLIC PLUS
QUEER + COULEUR = QOULEUR
ROUND TABLE & PERFORMANCES
OF QUEER INDIGENOUS ARTISTS and ARTISTS OF COLOUR
Friday March 13, 2015 - 5pm to 11pm
MAI CAFÉ: 3680, rue Jeanne-Mance FREE ADMISSION
Qouleur: neologism merging the words queer and colour. A Qollective of artists and activists indigenous, people of colour from the LGBTIQ* communities. The MAI will host Qouleur and present various activities to celebrate contemporary queer identity.
Queer is the second of three concentrations this season for MAI’s Public Plus (+) Series. While remaining fixed on the core values of inclusivity and community-building, M.A.I shifts its gaze a millimetre in advocating global LGBTIQ* civil rights, questioning what constitutes cultural identity, what constitutes an intercultural exchange, questions that help to ultimately uncover the many classifications that exist within the definition of diversity. Over the years, "queer" seems to have taken hold as an umbrella term for those voices that do not fit comfortably within the LGBTIQ* identity constellation, with queer artists having distinguished themselves not only by asking provocative questions within the LGBTQ* community itself, but also by utilizing their work to open debates about alternative sexual, political, and aesthetic practices that go unrecognized by mainstream society as well as by the artistic and cultural institutions that speak to that society. |
